Butter Converter — Sticks, Cups, Tablespoons, Grams

One amount in, every other unit out. Sticks, cups, tablespoons, grams, and ounces.

American recipes measure butter in sticks, cups, and tablespoons; the rest of the world weighs it in grams. The marks printed on a US butter wrapper make the conversion exact, not approximate: a single stick is 8 tablespoons, half a cup, 4 ounces, and 113.4 grams. Enter any amount in any unit below and every other unit is computed at once — no submit button, no rounding surprises.

How to use

  1. Type the amount

Enter how much butter you have — "1", "2.5", "0.5". Decimals are fine.

  2. Pick the unit you're starting from

Choose sticks, tablespoons, cups, grams, or ounces from the dropdown.

  3. Read every other unit

The result box lists the same amount of butter expressed in all the other units at once. Each line is rounded for the kitchen but computed from exact factors.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams is one stick of butter?
One US stick of butter is 113.4 grams — usually rounded to 113 g in recipes. That's 8 tablespoons, half a cup, or 4 ounces. The stick's own wrapper prints these tablespoon and cup marks.
How many tablespoons are in a stick of butter?
Exactly 8 tablespoons. Each tablespoon of butter is 14.175 g, so 8 × 14.175 g = 113.4 g, one full stick.
Is European butter the same size as a US stick?
No. US butter comes in 113 g (4 oz) sticks, four to a one-pound box. European butter is most often sold in 250 g blocks (and sometimes 200 g or 500 g), with no stick or tablespoon markings. A 250 g European block is roughly 2.2 US sticks, so when an American recipe calls for "1 stick" you need about 113 g cut from the block.
Does salted butter weigh the same as unsalted?
Yes. Salted and unsalted butter have the same density and the same stick dimensions, so the weight-to-volume conversions on this page apply to both. The salt content changes the seasoning of the dish, not the gram weight of a stick or tablespoon.
How many sticks are in a cup of butter?
Two. One US cup of butter is 226.8 g, which is exactly 2 sticks or 16 tablespoons. Half a cup is one stick.
Why are clarified butter or ghee amounts slightly different?
This converter uses the standard density of solid US butter as sold. Clarifying butter removes water and milk solids, so the same volume of ghee weighs a little less than the same volume of regular butter. For everyday baking and cooking the difference is small, but for precision work weigh ghee directly in grams.

About

Where the numbers come from

US butter is sold in standardized 4-ounce (113.4 g) sticks whose wrappers print tablespoon and cup gradations — 8 tbsp and 1/2 cup per stick. From that single definition every other factor follows: 1 cup = 2 sticks = 226.8 g, 1 tbsp = 14.175 g, and 1 oz = 28.3495 g (the avoirdupois ounce). Nothing here is estimated; all five units are anchored to grams and converted exactly.

Rounding for the kitchen

The result box trims each figure to a sensible number of decimals — whole grams for large amounts, more precision for fractions — but the underlying math always runs on the exact factors. That's why 1 stick reads as 4 oz even though 113.4 ÷ 28.3495 is 3.9997: the tiny remainder comes from the ounce being defined independently of the stick, and it disappears at kitchen precision.
