Frequently asked questions

What is BMI?
Body Mass Index is a single number summarising the relationship between someone's weight and height. It's the simplest screening tool for under- or over-weight conditions at a population level.
What's the formula?
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². For imperial: BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)². Both produce the same result.
Is BMI accurate for athletes?
Often not. Muscle is denser than fat, so heavily muscular people frequently classify as 'overweight' or 'obese' under BMI despite low body-fat percentages. Consider body-fat percentage or waist-to-height ratio if you're highly trained.
Is BMI accurate for the elderly?
It tends to under-estimate health risk in older adults because muscle mass naturally decreases with age. A BMI in the 'healthy' range for a 75-year-old may hide sarcopenia.
Does the calculator store my data?
No. Everything is computed in your browser; the inputs are never sent to a server.
What about children?
BMI for children uses age-and-sex-specific percentiles, not the adult WHO bands shown here. Don't apply this calculator to anyone under 20.
What's a healthy waist measurement?
Waist-to-height under 0.5 is broadly considered low-risk, regardless of BMI. WHR (waist-to-hip ratio) is another widely used metric. Convertitive will ship dedicated calculators for both later.
Should I worry about a single reading?
BMI varies day-to-day with hydration, food in the digestive tract, and clothing. Use a weekly average and a multi-month trend if you're tracking changes.

History of BMI

Devised by Belgian statistician Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s as a population-level descriptor and popularised by physiologist Ancel Keys in 1972 (who coined the modern name). It's an imperfect tool — Quetelet himself was clear that his index described a population, not individuals — but its simplicity has kept it in clinical use for nearly two centuries.
