A byte is 8 bits — the smallest addressable unit on virtually every modern computer. ASCII text is one byte per character; UTF-8 ranges from 1 to 4 bytes per character.

Mobile app developers size local cache limits this way: capping an image cache at 50 MB means budgeting 50,000,000 bytes, which at roughly 150 kB per compressed thumbnail holds about 330 images before the cache-eviction logic has to start removing the oldest entries. App store review guidelines and background-storage quotas are stated in MB, while the actual cache implementation tracks bytes, so this division sits directly in the eviction algorithm's threshold check.
