Fuel consumption table: L/100km to US and UK MPG chart
A lookup table for comparing a European fuel figure with a US or UK one, with both gallon sizes kept apart.
By Buğra SözeriPublished
European and most other car specs give fuel use in liters per 100 km, where lower is better. The US and UK use miles per gallon, where higher is better, and the two countries use different gallons. This page lets you look up any common figure in all three without mixing them up. All values are computed from the exact gallon and mile.
The two constants
Because one figure is distance per fuel and the other is fuel per distance, you divide instead of multiply: MPG (US) = 235.215 ÷ L/100km and MPG (UK) = 282.481 ÷ L/100km. Why this is not a straight line is covered in MPG to L/100km: why it isn't linear.

Worked example: comparing a German and a US listing
A German listing says 5.5 L/100km and a US listing for a similar car says 40 MPG. Convert the German figure: 235.215 ÷ 5.5 = 42.8 MPG (US). Or convert the US figure the other way: 235.215 ÷ 40 = 5.88 L/100km. Either way the US car looks a little better on paper. A UK buyer would see the German car as 51.4 MPG, which is why UK and US reviews of the same model print different numbers.
Before you compare: test cycles differ
The table converts units, not test methods. EU figures come from the WLTP cycle and US figures from EPA tests, and the two are run differently, so the same car can get slightly different official numbers even after conversion. Our real-world vs EPA guide explains why your own number will likely differ from both.
Frequently asked questions
- What is 6 L/100km in MPG?
- 6 L/100km is 39.2 MPG in US gallons and 47.1 MPG in UK gallons.
- What is 30 MPG in L/100km?
- 30 MPG (US) is 7.84 L/100km. 30 MPG (UK) is 9.42 L/100km, because the UK gallon is bigger.
- What is the formula from L/100km to MPG?
- MPG (US) = 235.215 ÷ L/100km, and MPG (UK) = 282.481 ÷ L/100km. The same constants work in reverse: L/100km = constant ÷ MPG.
- Why are UK MPG figures higher than US ones?
- An imperial gallon is 4.54609 liters and a US gallon is 3.785411784 liters. The car goes further on the larger gallon, so the same car gets a higher MPG number in the UK.
