MPGe Explained: Electric Car Efficiency
One fixed number — 33.7 kWh per gallon-equivalent — lets an EV's window sticker use the same units drivers already understand.

An EV’s window sticker says something like “131 MPGe.” That number is trying to answer a specific question: if you compared this EV to a gas car using the same units drivers already understand, what would the “mileage” be? The answer requires converting electricity into a gasoline-equivalent unit first — that conversion is what MPGe is.
The fixed conversion: 33.7 kWh = 1 gallon-equivalent
The EPA calculated the energy content of one US gallon of gasoline, based on gasoline’s standard heat of combustion, and fixed it at 33.7 kilowatt-hours. This number doesn’t change per vehicle or per test — it’s a unit-conversion constant, the same role the number 1609.34 plays converting miles to meters. Every MPGe figure on every EV label uses this exact same 33.7 kWh baseline.
The formula, in full:
MPGe = miles driven ÷ (kWh of battery energy used ÷ 33.7)
A vehicle that drives 100 miles on 30 kWh of battery energy: 30 ÷ 33.7 = 0.89 gallon-equivalents. 100 ÷ 0.89 ≈ 112 MPGe.
Why MPGe numbers look so much higher than MPG
Electric motors convert roughly 85-90% of battery energy into motion. Internal combustion engines convert roughly 20-30% of gasoline’s energy into motion — the rest is lost as heat, largely due to the thermodynamic limits of combustion itself, not poor engineering. That efficiency gap is real and is exactly what MPGe is measuring — it’s not a flaw in the metric, it’s the metric doing its job. A 130 MPGe EV isn’t “2.6x better” than a 50 MPG hybrid in the way that phrase implies for two gas cars; it reflects two different energy-conversion technologies being placed on a shared scale.
What MPGe doesn't capture
- Charging losses. MPGe is calculated from energy used at the battery, not energy drawn from the wall outlet. AC Level 1/2 charging typically loses 10-15% of the electricity to heat and conversion inefficiency before it reaches the battery; DC fast charging can lose more under some conditions. Your actual electricity bill reflects wall-to-wheels energy, which is somewhat worse than the MPGe figure implies — structurally the same kind of gap the real-world-vs-EPA gap describes for gas cars.
- Upstream generation.MPGe says nothing about how the electricity was generated — coal-fired grid electricity and solar-charged electricity produce identical MPGe on the same car, because MPGe measures vehicle efficiency, not grid carbon intensity. That’s a separate, well-studied question the EPA label doesn’t attempt to answer.
- Driving-condition sensitivity.Like combustion MPG, MPGe is a lab-cycle estimate. Cold weather in particular hits EV range harder than it hits gas-car MPG, because heating a cabin has to draw from the same battery that powers the drivetrain (a gas engine has waste heat to spare; an EV mostly doesn’t).
Using MPGe to actually compare cars
MPGe is most useful for two comparisons, and weaker for a third:
- EV vs. EV: directly comparable — same 33.7 kWh baseline, same test cycle. A 140 MPGe EV genuinely uses less battery energy per mile than a 100 MPGe EV.
- Plug-in hybrid electric-mode vs. gas-mode: PHEVs report both an MPGe (electric-only range) and a conventional MPG (gas-only, once the battery is depleted) — useful for estimating real costs if you know your typical daily mileage relative to electric range.
- EV vs. gas car, as a cost estimate: weaker. The 33.7 kWh conversion is an energy equivalence, not a cost equivalence — electricity and gasoline are priced completely differently per unit of energy in every market. For an actual cost comparison, convert your local electricity price (per kWh) and gas price (per gallon) directly rather than routing through MPGe.

Comparing an EV's 120 MPGe to a hybrid's 50 MPG isn't measuring the same kind of efficiency loss.
