What timezone does the countdown use?
Your device's local timezone. The target is treated as midnight on the named date in your local clock — so 'days until Christmas' rolls over when your local midnight hits December 25.
Do you count today?
No. 'Days until' is exclusive of today and inclusive of the target day's start. If today is December 24 in your timezone, the counter reads 1 day until Christmas.
What about leap days?
Handled automatically — the underlying date arithmetic respects the Gregorian leap-year rule (every 4 years, except centuries not divisible by 400).
What happens after the date passes?
For named events (Christmas, New Year, etc.) the slug automatically rolls forward to the next year's date. For a raw-date URL the page switches to counting time elapsed since that date.

The widget renders the integer number of full local days between now and midnight on the target date, plus hours/minutes/seconds inside the current day. There is no server-side clock — the figure you see comes from your browser, so it's accurate to your timezone without needing to ask.
