A bit is the smallest unit of digital information — a single 0 or 1. Eight bits make one byte. The bit is the natural unit for bandwidth (most network speeds are quoted in bits per second, not bytes).

ISPs and enterprise network planners use this when translating a leased-line speed into storage-transfer capacity: a 2 Gbps dedicated circuit can, under ideal conditions, move 0.25 GB every second, so replicating a 10 TB dataset over that link takes a theoretical minimum of roughly 40,000 seconds (about 11 hours) before accounting for TCP overhead or contention. The gigabit-versus-gigabyte gap at this scale is exactly what turns a seemingly generous bandwidth quote into a disappointing transfer window.
