Running pace chart per km: min/mile and 5K to marathon times
A per-kilometer pace chart that answers the two questions runners actually have: what is this in min/mile, and what finish time does it give me?
By Buğra SözeriPublished
Most of the world sets running paces in minutes per kilometer, but many plans, podcasts and US race results still talk in minutes per mile. The table below starts from the per-km pace on your watch and gives the per-mile pace, the speed in km/h, and the finish time for the four common road distances. Every value is computed from the exact mile, not read off another chart.
The math behind the chart
Pace is time per distance. A mile is longer than a kilometer, so the per-mile pace is the per-km pace multiplied by 1.609344. Finish time is pace times distance, and speed is 3600 ÷ pace in seconds. The race distances used are 5 km, 10 km, 21.0975 km and 42.195 km.

Times are rounded to the nearest second. If you are starting from a per-mile pace instead, use our min/mile to min/km table. If you start from a goal marathon time, see marathon pace by finish time.
Worked example: a 5:30 per km runner
Your easy-to-steady pace is 5:30 per km, which is 330 seconds. Per mile: 330 × 1.609344 = 531.1 s, or 8:51 per mile. Speed: 3600 ÷ 330 = 10.91 km/h, which is the number to type into a treadmill set to km. Held for a half marathon, that pace gives 330 × 21.0975 = 1:56:02.
Reading the chart for race goals
The jumps between rows grow with distance. Moving from 5:15 to 5:00 per km saves 1:15 in a 5K but 10:33 in a marathon. That is why marathon goals are set in small steps, and why a pace that feels fine for 5 km is often too fast for 42. Use the 5K and 10K columns to check what you can already hold, then pick a slower row for the longer race.
Frequently asked questions
- What is 5:00 per km in minutes per mile?
- 5:00 per km is 8:03 per mile. Multiply the pace in seconds by 1.609344: 300 × 1.609344 = 482.8 seconds.
- What 10K time does a 6:00 per km pace give?
- Exactly 1:00:00. At 6:00 per km a 5K takes 30:00, a half marathon 2:06:35 and a marathon 4:13:10.
- What pace do I need for a sub-2 hour half marathon?
- Faster than 5:41 per km (9:09 per mile). In practice aim a few seconds quicker, since GPS and course tangents rarely line up perfectly.
- Why does my watch distance differ from the race distance?
- Races are measured on the shortest possible line. Most runners cover a little more by weaving and taking wide corners, and GPS adds its own error, so a watch often shows slightly more than the official distance.
