The byte
A byte is 8 bits — the smallest addressable unit on virtually every modern computer. ASCII text is one byte per character; UTF-8 ranges from 1 to 4 bytes per character.

Bits = Bytes × 8Bytes to bits multiplies by 8. This is the conversion behind every 'why is my download slower than my internet speed' question: a 500 Mbps connection is 62.5 MB/s, not 500 MB/s, because ISPs market in bits and file managers report in bytes. Cryptographic key lengths (AES-256, RSA-2048) are also quoted in bits — an AES-256 key is 32 bytes of actual data, and confusing the two units when sizing a key-storage field is a classic off-by-8× bug.
Protocol designers multiply by 8 when packing a byte-oriented payload into a bit-counted frame — a 20-byte TCP header is 160 bits of overhead on every packet, which matters when budgeting a low-bandwidth IoT radio link. RAM chips are also spec'd both ways: a 512 MB module is 4,294,967,296 bits of storage. Firmware developers keep the two scales straight because register widths (bits) and buffer sizes (bytes) live in the same code and are easy to swap by mistake.
